Q1. What is NEET- UG?

NEET stands for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test.

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (UG) is a new qualifying cum entrance examination notified under the 'Regulations on Graduate Medical Education 1997 and BDS Course Regulations, 2007' by the Medical Council of India as published in the Gazette of India Extraordinary dated 21st December, 2010 and 15st February, 2012 and the Dental Council of India as published in the Gazette of India Extraordinary dated 31st May, 2012. NEET has been introduced by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) Govt, of India and Medical Council of India (MCI). NEET has been introduced for:

Undergraduate (NEET-UG) Medical Course like MBBS, BDS etc.

Post Graduate (NEET-PG) Medical Courses like M.S, M.D etc.

Q2. Why NEET?

a.To create an umbrella or single entrance exam for all medical aspirants in India.

b.Till now admission to the se seats was done through national state level entrance exams. There were over 25 such different Medical Entrance Examinations in India for admission into various Govt. & Pvt. Medical Colleges.

c.On an average a student appeared in 7-9 entrance exams, thereby causing unnecessary stress on them as well as on parents.

d.Moreover, giving so many exams creates lot of financial burden for the parents since each examinations involves expenses like Application Fee & commuting to appear for the entrance test in various cities / at various test centres. So NEET will avoid unnecessary wastage of time, effort & money.

e.Moreover, multiple exams also pose the challenge of preparing for different syllabi and patterns for students. This further increases the stress among students.

f.NEET will replace AIPMT and other state-level CET such as Delhi-PMT, MHCET, R-PMT, WBJEE, EAMCET etc. (AIIMS does not come under NEET)

Q3. What is the difference between AIPMT and NEET examination?

NEET is a single eligibility cum entrance examination namely 'National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for admission to MBBS/BDS courses' in each academic year. AIPMT was conducted by CBSE for selection of candidates for admission to 15% seats under All India Quota. With the introduction of NEET, the said examination will replace AIPMT and other similar Under Graduate level Medical Entrance Examinations.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will be conducting the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test for admission to MBBS/BDS Courses in the session 2013-14. Other important organizations involved are:

A total of ~355 MBBS & ~300 Dental colleges have been listed by MCI, which will fall under the aegis of NEET 2013. These colleges shall offer a total of ~43,700 MBBS seats & ~24,800 Dental seats across India.

Q6.Whether the exam. will be offline or online?

NEET (UG)-2013 will be an offline pen and paper test.

Q9.What will be the pattern of NEET?

The Entrance Examination consists of one paper containing 180 objective type questions (four options with single correct answer) from the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany & Zoology) to be answered on the specially designed machine-gradable sheet using Blue/Black Ball Point Pen only. Each correct answer will get 04 marks and for each incorrect response, 01 mark will be deducted from the total score. Thus, paper will be of total 180x4 = 720 marks.

The NEET will be of three hours from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m.

Q14. What is the minimum and maximum age for appearing in NEET exam 2013?

The minimum age of candidate is 17 years completed at the time of admission or will complete the age on or before 31st December of the year of his/her admission to the 1st year MBBS/BDS Course.

The upper age limit for a candidate seeking admission under 15% All India Quota seats in Government Medical Colleges through National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) is 25 years as on 31st December of the year of the entrance examination. Further provided that this upper age limit shall be relaxed by a period of 5 (five) years for the candidates of Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes/Other Backward Classes.

There is no upper age limit for candidates appearing in the NEET for State Quota seats. However, admission shall be subject to the prevailing norms in each State/UT.

Q15.Is it compulsory to take Maths if I want to appear in NEET?

It is not necessary to take Maths to appear in NEET.

Q16.I am a blind student. Will I get amanuenses?

Provision has been made to provide amanuenses to the blind candidates. Candidate has to contact Executive Director, JEE(Main) for JEE(Main) exam one month before the examination along with medical certificate issued by the competent authority. Amanuenses will be provided by the Center Superintendent. Class XI student of Commerce/Humanities without Mathematics will only be provided as amanuenses. One hour extra time will also be allowed to such candidates.

Q17. I have passed 12 class in the subjects of English, Hindi, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physical education and appeared/appearing for Biology subject from any other Board(s)/NIOS examination, will I eligible for NEET.

No, any examination equivalent to class XII passed from a recognized Board/University comprising of Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Bio-technology including practical test in these subjects and English is only eligible.

Q18. For how many attempts / numbers a student can appear for NEET?

There is no limit for number of attempts. However Eligibility for admission for MBBS/BDS courses will be subject to Medical Institutions/University.

Q19. What are the reservation rules for JEE-Main Exam?

As per Government of India rules candidates belonging to certain categories are admitted to seats reserved for them based on relaxed criteria. These categories are:

I. Other Backward Classes (OBC) if they belong to Non-Creamy Layer (NCL)

II. Scheduled Castes (SC)

III. Scheduled Tribes (ST)

IV. Persons with Physical Disability (PD)

Benefit of reservation shall be given only to those classes/castes/tribes which are in the respective central list published by the Govt of India.

Q20. What is state code of eligibility?

State Code of eligibility means the Code of the State from where a candidate has passed +2 examination by virtue of which he/she becomes eligible to appear in the JEE-Main for admission to B.E/B.Tech and B.Arch/B. Planning Courses of the institutions/ Colleges of the States/UT. Indian nationals passing the equivalent qualifying examination from any institution abroad, the State of Eligibility will be determined on the basis of permanent address given in the Passport of the candidate.

What is MBBS?

MBBS stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. The naming suggests that they are two separate degrees; however, in practice, they are usually treated as one and awarded together. Professionals holding MBBS degrees are referred to by the courtesy title of "Doctor" and use the prefix "Dr". The degrees are the British equivalent of the American M.D. Medicinae Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirurgical (abbreviated in various ways, viz. MBBS or MBChB, MB BS, MB BChir, BM BCh, MB BCh, MB ChB, BM BS, BM, BMed etc.), are the two first professional degrees awarded upon graduation from medical school in medicine and surgery by universities in United Kingdom and other places following the British tradition, such as Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India.

The basic or degree level qualification for a medical profession is MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine And Bachelor of Surgery) which is of 5 1/2 years duration (including 1 year internship). Selection for MBBS is through an All India Entrance Examination. The qualification required for entrance is 10+2 or equivalent with Science subjects. In the case of private medical colleges entrance examinations are conducted by the institutes individually. Every student shall undergo a period of over 4 1/2 academic years divided into 9 semesters, followed by one year compulsory rotating internship. Medical education in India is regulated by Medical Council of India.

In India Medical education is offered at four levels:

1.First degree - Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)

2.Postgraduate diplomas in specific areas such as Child Health (DCH), Laryngology and Otology (DLO), Diploma in Gynecology and Obstetrics (DGO) and postgraduate degree in broad specialties – Doctor of Medicine (MD), Master of Surgery (MS)

3.Postgraduate degree (Super Specialties) - Doctor of Medicine (DM), and Master of Chirurgiae (MCh) also known as post-doctoral degrees

What is BDS?

BDS stands for Bachelor of Dental Surgery. In India BDS degree is awarded at the successful completion of four years of study and one year of internship to the students as per the old regulations of Dental council of India. According to new regulations, the BDS course comprises of five years with no internship period. Post graduate courses (Master of Dental Surgery. MDS) are also available in different specialties. It requires 3 years of study after BDS.

Dentistry is the branch of medicine that is involved in the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders and conditions of the oral cavity, the maxillofacial area and the adjacent and associated structures, and their impact on the human body. While pursuing the course, one learns about different aspects of Dental Science, which includes various forms of treatment including surgical procedures. Dental materials, Dental anatomy & Oral histology, Oral Pathology, Community Dentistry, Endodontics, Oral Medicine & Radiology are some of the topics that are generally taught.

After pursuing BDS course, one can work as dentist in government or private hospitals or open up his/her own clinic, to serve the society.

The increasing complicated lifestyles giving birth to a variety of ailments have made it impossible for General Physicians with an MBBS degree to handle all ailments. It is here that specialization in a particular branch of medicine becomes a necessity. The major Specializations include General Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat), Psychiatry, Anesthesiology etc. There is also Super Specializations which require a further 3-5 years of study in areas such as Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Cardio-thoracic surgery, Conito-urinary surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology and Clinical Hematology.

General Practitioner or Physician

He diagnosis and treats every day and sundry ailments of the human body. MBBS holders practice as physicians.

General Surgeon

Is one who specializes in surgery for all organs of the body. He can further specialize in specific areas. Duties involve examining the patient to determine the extent and nature of injury, treatment through operation and giving post operative care. Surgery is of various types Orthopaedic, Plastic, Neuro etc.

Anesthetist or Anesthesiologists

Administers anesthetics to a patient undergoing surgical operation according to the nature of operation. It is he who makes the surgical procedure as painless as possible. His duties involve examining the patient to determine his capacity to withstand shock of operation and anesthesia. He/she has huge responsibility and has to be present throughout the operation.

Psychiatrist

Diagnoses and treats mental disorders. Psychiatry has two major branches: The first is psychotherapy, the application of psychological techniques to the treatment of mental illnesses. This branch uses non-drug therapies and will not use physical techniques such as drugs or surgery. The second branch is psychiatry, where medical therapies are used. After diagnosing physical and behavioral symptoms, drugs and other means may be used for treatment.

Neurologist

Diagnosis and treats diseases related to brain and nervous system. They also specialize in Neuro-surgery.

Pediatrician

Treats newborn babies and children.

Ophthalmologist or Eye Specialist

Treats diseases and disorders of eyes.

Pathologist

Investigate the cause of various diseases and the possibilities for their prevention. His duties involve conducting chemical, microscopic and bacteriological test in labs and examining blood, tissues, urine etc. to find out the cause for disease.

Cardiologist

Also called as heart specialist. Treats diseases related to heart and circulatory system.

Gynecologist-Obstetrician

Diagnosis and treats diseases and disorders of human female reproduction system. They care for pregnant women from conception through delivery.

Dermatologist

One who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of skin problems.

Orthopedist

Deals with diseases connected to skeletal system. Orthopedics is that branch of medicine that deals with the correction of deformities and prevention of disorders in joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, all bones and bony tissue.

ences was established by an Act of parliament in 1956. The degrees and diplomas awarded by the Institute under the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act are recognized medical qualifications for the purpose of the Indian Medical Council Act and notwithstanding anything contained in the Medical Council Act, are deemed to be included in the first schedule of that Act, entitling the holders to the same privileges as those attached to the equivalent awards from other universities of India. Under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana 6 New All India Institutes of Medical Sciences have been established similar to AIIMS, New Delhi. Government of India has decided that the Academic Session in six New AIIMS at Bhopal, Patna, Jodhpur, Rishikesh, Raipur and Bhubaneswar starts in August 2013. The proposal is for an intake of 100 students for each of the institutions. The Ministry after deliberation took the view that for the second academic session (2013-2014), selection for admission should be done through the same entrance examination through which candidates are selected for AIIMS New Delhi. The Admission will be done on the basis of merit-cum-choice of the candidates.

The Prime concern of the Institute (AIIMS) is to develop patterns of teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in all the branches so as to demonstrate a high standard of medical education to all medical colleges and allied institutions in India.
